-- FRED FRILLICI -- NF&GC's LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATIVE HONORED

Fred Frillici, our club Legislative representative, shown here with Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal,
was recently honored by his alma mater, Fairfield University, for his good work as a Connecticut Aquatic Resources Education (CARE) instructor.  Fred was featured in the school’s Fairfield Magazine, a quarterly publication for current and alumni associates.  He graduated in 1952 as a member of the University’s second graduating class.

The cover of the magazine showcases Fred and one of his students at a picturesque local fishing spot, and the accompanying story describes how Fred helped one of his disabled students catch her first fish.

The student is just one of the nearly 5,000 children Frillici has introduced to fishing in the last 23-plus years. A chief instructor with the CARE program, Fred goes wherever he’s asked, volunteering with dozens of public school classes in Bridgeport and supporting  suburban children in Greenwich, Weston, Stratford, and beyond.

Frillici doesn’t just hand each child a rod and reel and head for a trout-stocked stream. His courses typically comprise three or four two-hour classes in which he patiently teaches his students the “ins and outs” of a tackle box, how and when to fish, basic baiting and casting techniques, and how to find good fishing spots, which all fisherman know is the most important part of the popular pastime. Once the class has mastered the basics, Fred and his students head out to a local fishing setting to practice what they’ve learned. “I usually take them somewhere where I’m pretty sure they’re going to catch something,” said the retired scientist and active member of Fairfield’s Golden Stags.

His dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. The Connecticut Post named him the Sportsman of the Decade 1990-2000 for his volunteer work.
